Episode 65: Tough Times for Chris Weidman
EDITOR’S NOTE: This episode of Gogopoda was recorded before Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza signed a new deal with the UFC.
At UFC 210, Chris Weidman lost his third fight in a row. It feels like it’s been eons since he destroyed Anderson Silva in back-to-back fights. Of course, this most recent loss doesn’t come without its fair share of controversy. Weidman’s tried to place both hands on the ground to eliminate knees from the arsenal of Gegard Mousasi, but it didn’t work. Two hard knees and a circus of confused officials later, Mousasi is declared the winner by TKO.
Where does Weidman go from here? He’s lost three fights in a row in a division that’s log-jammed by a title fight between two old guys. Does he make the move to 205? Does the UFC do something unspeakable and give him a fight against lower ranked opposition so he can, GASP, re-build his confidence? It’s tough to find all that out a week removed from another devastating loss for the former champion, but I’m very interested to see what path he takes moving forward.Next Episode: Episode 66: King of the Cage
